在4月26日，Google Earth team宣布了一个令人兴奋的好消息-Google maps添加了一个新视图：地球（Earth）模式。简言之，我们可以像在Google Earth中一样使用Web浏览器浏览全球的3D场景、地形。
要想使用Google maps的地球模式，首先需要安装Google Earth Plugin。安装成功后打开Google maps，可以看到地图界面的右上角增加了一项“地球”选项。在地球模式中，可以使用鼠标中键前后左右拖动调节地图视角，就像在Google Earth中一样进行操作。
到目前为止，Goolge maps用户还不能使用Google Earth的全部功能，比如编辑KML，历史影像（historical imagery），GPS路径、创建旅行（tour-creation）、火星模式、天空模式以及模拟飞行等等。
